Using the Ultra Pulse C02 laser, it is now possible to perform cosmetic skin resurfacing. This is a precise procedure designed to remove wrinkles, sun (actinic) damage, and pigmentary irregularities and to soften predominant expression lines and scars. This laser may also be used to remove pre-cancerous skin lesions, warts, benign tumors and some skin cancers.

Before and After Laser Resurfacing
Lasers have been used for decades to remove or vaporize specific skin lesions. The Ultra Pulse laser's new technological advances allow the removal of thin layers of the skin with minimal heat damage and minimal risk of scarring. Complete skin resurfacing is performed pulse by pulse, sculpting wrinkles and irregularities away. The laser removes thin layers of the skin, smoothing out the skin surface. Natural healing mechanisms then stimulate new collagen formation. The new, healthy outer layer of skin produces a younger-looking, smoother appearance. Skin tightening also occurs as a result of the effects of the laser on collagen fibers. While specific areas can be targeted, such as frown furrows, crow's feet, laugh lines, smoker's lines, acne scars and fine wrinkling, full-face resurfacing produces even more dramatic results.

Before and After Laser Resurfacing
In performing resurfacing procedures, the laser is used to paint the entire treatment area. After treating the area, it is wiped clean with saline. The first "pass" strips the epidermis (top layer of skin) fully. Subsequent passes concentrate on correcting target areas. The procedure is virtually bloodless with less bruising and swelling than dermabrasion or scalpel surgery and the recovery time is much shorter. This laser can be adjusted precisely so that it penetrates the skin only as deeply as necessary, reducing the risk of both scarring and pigment problems.
Like any deep peel, the laser removes protective layers of the skin, creating a wound, similar to a sunburn, which takes approximately 10-14 days to heal. Pinkness of the skin may persist for several weeks following surgery. The pink color is covered easily with make-up within several days of treatment. Because laser resurfacing is only minimally invasive, the patient is able to return to their normal activities usually within two weeks with healthy, younger-appearing skin.
